Celebrating 144 Years

May 2, 2010 - 10:22pm

It was 144 years in the making and on Sunday, members of Hunter Chapel AME Zion Church took part in their anniversary service celebrating the theme, "The one who moves mountains begin by carrying one small stone at a time."

"144 years. A lot of people have come through this place and gone on to college and gone on to Glory, but God has been the cement in keeping this together," Reverend Dr. Jamal Finkley said.

Members of the church say it's the family aspect of the church that keeps people coming back, like Martha Cammon, who has been a member since 1963.

"There's always that something," Cammon said, "something of supporting it and making sure it continues. That the legacy is passed on."

The orginal church was built on its present location in 1880 for the cost of $6,000 and was later dedicated on Sunday, October 23rd, 1881.
