The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees has approved plans for a new Champions Plaza at the University of Alabama. The Board gave its approval Friday morning in Tuscaloosa, including plans for the plaza to be named the Sarah Patterson Champions Plaza, in honor of long-time UA Gymnastics Coach Sarah Patterson. Patterson has brought six national championships to the University, including the latest one in 2012.
The plaza will be located adjacent to Sewell-Thomas Stadium. It's expected to cost around $2.8 million. UA Athletics Director Mal Moore said the plaza will recognize both Southeastern Conference Championships and National Championships within UA sports. The plans also call for a wall recognizing coaches that have won National Championships.
