July 18, 2012 - 9:55am

Information from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office:

According to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 10:39 p.m., authorities received a 911 call to a residence on Hwy 43 North between Charlie Shirley Road and Mitt Lary Road.  The complainant advised of a disturbance with somebody beating on something or someone with a stick.

The Sheriff's Office said at 10:41 p.m., a deputy observed a black male approximately 30 feet from the driveway on Hwy 43, holding what appeared to be a pipe.  When the deputy attempted to make contact, the man dropped the pipe and left.

The Sheriff's Office said the next unit arrived at the complainant’s residence and was again advised of the person beating on something or someone.  The complainant stated that her husband went outside with a flashlight after they heard a loud pop and the air conditioning unit in their home went off.  Deputies were again advised that a black male was seen with a stick striking something.  The complainant advised that she saw the black male through the kitchen window and yelled for another adult in the house to come to the window.  The second adult said they could see the suspect hitting something with a pipe.  At this time, it was learned that the complainant had not seen her husband since he had gone to check on the air conditioning unit.

The Sheriff's Office said when deputies went to further investigate where the black male had been seen, the body of 79-year-old Kenneth McDaniel was found lying beside the air conditioning unit, on the west side of the house.  It appeared to deputies that McDaniel had been struck multiple times in the head by a blunt instrument.  A perimeter was established by Sheriff’s deputies with assistance of the Northport Police Department.  The Homicide Unit, a bloodhound and the Aviation Unit assisted in the investigation and search for the suspect.

At approximately 12:56 a.m., an investigator with the Sheriff’s Office made contact with an individual matching the description of the suspect at the intersection of Candlewood and Hwy. 43 North. The individual was taken into custody and transported to Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit. 29-year-old Christopher Patton of 2803 42nd Avenue in Northport was arrested on the charge of Murder.  Patton was transported to the Tuscaloosa County Jail, and bond was set at $70,000.00.
