CT School Shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - Investigators are trying to figure out what led a 20-year-old man to slaughter 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school.
A medical examiner says the victims were killed by multiple rifle shots, some of them up close. Dr. H. Wayne Carver said at a news conference Saturday he believes "everybody was hit more than once."
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says the "innocent little boys and girls" were "taken from their families far too soon." ...Read more
Suspect in Custody
From The University of Alabama: Tuscaloosa Police Department has the suspect in custody off campus. No one was injured on campus and no students were involved. Please resume normal activities.
At approx. 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, UA notified students, faculty and staff of reports of an armed individual at Phi Delta Theta fraternity house at 190 University Boulevard. The message, sent via E-mail, text and phone, asked people to stay away from the area.

New UA President
TUSCALOOSA - (WVUA) - The University of Alabama Board of Trustees announced this afternoon that Judy Bonner will be the next President of the University of Alabama. The Board accepted the resignation of Dr. Guy Bailey earlier in the day.

Referendum Results
Alabama voters have decided by a 2-to-1 margin to support the withdrawal of $437 million from a state trust fund to help balance the General Fund budget for the next three years.
With 81 percent of the precincts reporting Tuesday, the vote was 66 percent for and 34 percent against.
Gov. Robert Bentley called it a temporary funding bridge to maintain essential state services, while state officials work on right-sizing government.

According to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 10:39 p.m., authorities received a 911 call to a residence on Hwy 43 North between Charlie Shirley Road and Mitt Lary Road. Wilkins Charged
According to Tuscaloosa Police, 44-year-old Nathan Van Wilkins has been charged with 18 counts of attempted murder and two counts of shooting into an occupied building/dwelling. He is in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $2 million bond. The charges stem from Tuesday's early morning mass shooting in Downtown Tuscaloosa, as well as a shooting late Monday night in Northport.

Suspect Caught
Police say the man who fired into a crowded bar near the University of Alabama turned himself into authorities.
Police Chief Steve Anderson said the man went to a business in Jasper and told employees that he was the suspect authorities were looking for. The employees called police and he was taken into custody.
The police chief would not identify the man. Anderson says he still doesn't know what the motive is, but they are investigating whether it involved a dispute between rival motorcycle gangs. ...Read more
